Demand for stricter fishing regulations as Antipodean albatross numbers plummet

Demand for stricter fishing regulations as Antipodean albatross numbers plummet

A Department of Conservation report shows female Antipodean albatrosses have declined by 42 per cent since 2004.

The species has a 'nationally critical' threat status.

DOC Principal science advisor Graeme Elliot says Kiwi and Aussie fishing boats aren't the problem.

He says international fishermen aren't using the required techniques to avoid the birds.
