A helicopter is on hand near a "significant" controlled burn-off in North Canterbury, as a precaution

Fire and Emergency's had more than a dozen calls, with smoke from the hillside blaze near Waiau - seen as far away as Culverden and Cheviot.

Fire and Emergency say the blaze is under control, and the landowner enlisted a helicopter as a precautionary measure.
