Emergency crews remain on-hand in storm battered Wairoa

Emergency crews remain on-hand in storm battered Wairoa

More than 100 properties have been significantly damaged in the town by this week's wild East Coast weather - with hundreds hit.

State Highway 38 is closed between Frasertown and Lake Waikaremoana, but a State of Emergency has been lifted in Hasting's Haumoana.

People can apply for emergency civil defence payments for food, bedding, and clothing.

FENZ spokesperson, Jason, Hill says Urban Search and Rescue teams have done initial surveys of about 500 buildings today.

Local authorities will later do in-depth assessments.
