The giant Whangamarino Wetlands fire, in Waikato, is now fully controlled

The giant Whangamarino Wetlands fire, in Waikato, is now fully controlled

It has burnt through more than a thousand hectares of significant land - since breaking out last Monday.

The globally rare habitat plays an important role in storing carbon.

The Department of Conservation's confirming there are no more hotspots - and they're now scaling down efforts.

Regional Director Tinaka Mearns says animals will have died, and there's been an enormous loss of habitat.

She says the quick response, meant about 148 hectares of wetland were protected.
