Homes and shops are in the dark after heavy rain caused power outages in Auckland

Power is out across parts of Remuera and Greenlane this morning after power lines came down on Peach Parade, leading to a road being closed and traffic lights not working.

Newstalk ZB's Ed Swift says lines appear to be hanging from a post very close to flooding - he believes the lines aren't on.

There's also isolated power outages in some areas of Northland which are expected to be resolved later today.

Meanwhile in the Tasman, Nelson's Maitai River has risen dramatically overnight after heavy downpours hit the region.
