Heavy rain is believed to contribute to a plane veering off Auckland Airport's runway in 2023 - because of a late switch to manual control

Heavy rain is believed to contribute to a plane veering off Auckland Airport's runway in 2023 - because of a late switch to manual control

    Auckland Airport
    Auckland Airport
The Melbourne to Auckland flight landed during a deluge of extreme rain and strong wind gusts.

A Transport Accident Investigation Commission report has found the autopilot was disengaged 20 metres above the runway, rather than between 90 and 180 metres, as recommended.

It found it likely meant the pilot didn't have sufficient time to stop the plane heading off course.

They regained control and completed the landing - with no injuries.
