Frustration in Nelson, as the South Island's biggest sawmill closes down

Frustration in Nelson, as the South Island's biggest sawmill closes down

Carter Holt Harvey has confirmed it will end operations at the Eves Valley sawmill - leaving 142 people jobless.

It's part of its plan to consolidate structural timber manufacturing at its Kawerau site in Bay of Plenty.

Tasman Mayor Tim King says there's been a lot of investment in Eves Valley, over the last seven years.

He says 25 million-dollars was invested in kilns and drying facilities - which adds to the disappointment.
