Most North Island eco-sanctuaries were damaged in Cyclone Gabrielle

Most North Island eco-sanctuaries were damaged in Cyclone Gabrielle

The New Zealand Journal of Ecology reveals 82 percent sustained damage in the 2023 extreme weather event, including from wind, erosion and flooding.

It notes when pest exclusion fences were damaged, pests were quick to enter the sanctuaries.

The researchers make several recommendations, including that eco-sanctuaries develop disaster response plans and large trees shouldn't be next to fences and other infrastructure.
