Hopes to save building and apartment owners from exorbitant costs

Hopes to save building and apartment owners from exorbitant costs

The Government's revealed changes to the regime on earthquake-prone buildings - which will strip thousands of buildings of their high-risk status.

Under the new rules just 80 will need full retrofits - while remediation for 15-hundred will be much cheaper.

Prime Minister Chris Luxon says some people faced bills amounting to hundreds-of-thousands of dollars.

He says for many, that made remediation uneconomic.
