Already flooded parts of NSW face the prospect of further heavy rain that could cause more flooding as the clean up continues around the state

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple flood warnings with heavy rain and rising rivers expected to continue into Monday in areas already affected.

Defence Minister Peter Dutton has compared the flooding devastation on the east coast of Australia to a cyclone and promised more defence force personnel on the ground to support the response.

Queensland residents hit by floods in the southeast are facing months of recovery as the state government donates more than $2 million to charities supporting those affected.

Previous estimates have put the total damage bill at more than $1 billion including insurance claims and major infrastructure repair, and work is under way to establish the full financial impact.
