A wet and windy weekend is on the cards today for parts of the South Island and lower North Island

A wet and windy weekend is on the cards today for parts of the South Island and lower North Island

Fiordland will be under an Orange Heavy Rain Warning from midday, before spreading to parts of Otago and Westland south of Otira throughout the day.

The south of the island and Canterbury High Country, will also be under an Orange Strong Wind Warning from around midday.

MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says the rain and wind are expected to head north over the course of the day.

He says at this point, the last severe weather forecast is a strong wind warning around Wellington on Sunday from 2am until midday.
