Nelson continues to weather financial pain - two years on from severe floods

Nelson continues to weather financial pain - two years on from severe floods

Flooding and numerous slips impacted roading and infrastructure after significant rain in August 2022 - which left a number of homes red stickered.

Each household is facing a 300-dollar storm recovery charge every year for the next decade as a result.

Nelson Mayor Nick Smith says the most difficult problem has been finding a solution for the homes put at risk by landslides - where the cost to make them safe exceeds their value.

He says buying out these properties has been a pragmatic solution.
