A health warning for parts of North Canterbury's Waiau River

A health warning for parts of North Canterbury's Waiau River

Health NZ's found high cover of potentially toxic algae in the South Bank Tributary of the river, above the Waiau Bridge.

People are urged to avoid the area and animals, particularly dogs, should not be allowed near the water until the warning's been lifted.

The algae can appear like dark brown mats attached to rocks along the river bed.
