World Rugby insist they've listened to concerns from players as part of their revised global sevens series for 2026

World Rugby insist they've listened to concerns from players as part of their revised global sevens series for 2026

A three-tier division will be in place - both New Zealand's men's and women's teams will play six events in tier one before an additional three "blockbuster" events to determine a world champion.

Two-time Olympian Andrew Knewstubb's told Newstalk ZB it's disheartening and frustrating to see where the sport is at the moment given its legacy.

He's called for shorter tournaments - and a return to revitalising a carnival atmosphere rather than promoting a family-friendly vibe.

A World Rugby spokesperson says they've consulted players, and committed to a reduction in tournament days as part of developing a more sustainable model for both hosts and teams.

Host cities are set to be announced in September.

Knewstubb will play in the NPC for Canterbury starting this weekend - with the new sevens season pushed back from its usual November start date.
