The on-field success of the top team in Super Rugby this season has been unable prevent a drop in the number of people attending their home matches

The on-field success of the top team in Super Rugby this season has been unable prevent a drop in the number of people attending their home matches

The Chiefs lead the competition through nine rounds - with a seven win, two loss record.

Super Rugby bosses recently referenced a number of metrics in trumpeting a strong start to the season - including average attendance being up 21 per cent.

But - ahead of their Anzac Day clash against the Force in Mt Maunganui - Chiefs CEO Simon Graafhuis says their home crowds are actually down on normal years.

Earlier this month competition chief executive Jack Mesley said the growth in average attendance is largely driven by more people going to games in Australia.
