The Kiwi led the way with 17 laps remaining, before a quick pitstop from eventual winner Josef Newgarden saw the American sneak into first.
A crash with 8 laps to go saw the red flag signalled, before Newgarden got the jump on McLaughlin when racing resumed.

Compatriot Marcus Armstrong finished 8th, with Scott Dixon 11th.
