A 35-year-old American man has died on Mt Aspiring in a skiing accident

Police said the accident happened around 1.30 this afternoon near the Bonar Glacier.

The skier had difficulty, fell on the slope and died.

Another skier with the man at the time attempted first aid.

Staff from the rescue coordination centre rushed to the scene after being advised of a beacon activation.

Police are in the process of locating the dead man's family.
