Nottingham Forest sack manager Ange Postecoglou immediately after loss to Chelsea

Nottingham Forest sacked the winless manager moments after their 3-0 defeat by Chelsea on Saturday local time, which left the club 17th in the standings and on the brink of slipping into the relegation zone.

Australian football manager Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by English Premier League side Nottingham Forest after eight games in charge.

Nottingham Forest sacked the winless manager 18 minutes after their 3-0 defeat against Chelsea on Saturday local time.

The defeat left the club 17th in the standings and on the brink of slipping into the relegation zone.

"Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect," the club said in a statement.

"The Club will make no further comment at this time."

He was sacked after 39 days in charge which means he has broken the unfortunate record of the shortest reign of a permanent manager in English Premier League history.

Sam Allardyce managed Leeds United for just 30 days, but he was an interim appointment.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresco said he felt "very sorry" for his counterpart.

"Unfortunately it's a business where you need to win games. Otherwise, for all of us, it's the same consequences," he told TNT Sports.

    Poor record punished

Postecoglou became the first ever Nottingham Forest manager to not win any of their first eight games in charge of the club.

In those eight matches, Forest picked up two draws and six defeats across all competitions.

In the Premier League, the Midlands club earned just a sole point in five matches during Postecoglou's tenure.

The writing was on the wall when club owner Evangelos Marinakis left his seat in the stands before full time as Chelsea were winning 3-0 late in the match.

The crowd let out a resounding chorus of boos at full time as Postecoglou stood alone near the middle of the pitch as he applauded the remaining home fans who hadn't already left the City Ground.

Speaking to media yesterday, Postecoglou said he felt like "I just don't fit — not here, just in general".

"If you look at things through the prism that I am a failed manager who's lucky to get this job — I know you're smirking at me, but that's what's been said — then, of course, these first five weeks look like 'this guy is under pressure'," he said.
