An Auckland local board has extended the lease on Newmarket's popular pool facility another 10 years

The Olympic Pool and Fitness Centre had been deemed earthquake-prone and in need of structural improvements.

An Auckland Council report recommended extending the lease until 2026 , before closing for a year.

But the Waitemata Local Board has opted to extend the lease until 2034 - and it will negotiate with the leasee to ensure essential repairs and upgrades are still done.
