Details on the cause of FatMan Scoop's death have emerged, almost a month after he collapsed at a concert in Connecticut.
The Be Faithful singer, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, had been performing at Hamden Town Center Park on August 30 when he experienced a medical emergency.
His family confirmed his death in a statement the following day.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the 56-year-old died of "hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease", the Los Angeles Times reports.
Hypertensive heart disease is a long-term condition caused by untreated high blood pressure.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit academic medical centre, complications of the condition can include heart failure, arrhythmia, stroke and sudden cardiac death.
Atherosclerosis is the hardening of arteries due to a build-up of fat, cholesterol and other substances.
The condition causes arteries to become narrow, limiting blood flow to organs and tissues, the Cleveland Clinic says.
"FatMan Scoop was not just a world class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle and a friend," his family wrote in their statement confirming his death.
"He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage."
Freeman's music catalogue included club hits Put Your Hands Up and It Takes Scoop.
During his career, he also collaborated with Missy Higgins on Lose Control and Mariah Carey for It's Like That.
