The Automobile Association wants immediate changes made to rural roads

An AA Foundation study says a third of serious and fatal crashes on rural crossroads occur because the driver doesn't know they're approaching an intersection.

Previous New Zealand Transport Agency statistics found 17 percent of deaths and serious injuries on rural roads occurred at intersections.

AA Road Safety Spokesperson Dylan Thomsen hopes the research prompts the NZTA to take action.

He says quick and cheap changes to road signage could make a drastic difference to safety.
