Mariah Carey will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs)

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is an accolade given for "outstanding contributions" and "profound impact" on music videos and popular culture.

The gong was renamed after the late King of Pop Michael Jackson won the Video Vanguard Award in 1991.

The trophy is a gold-plated moon person, as opposed to the silver ones for the other VMA categories.

In winning the award, Mariah joins past honourees, including The Beatles, Madonna, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake.

Also at the 2025 MTV VMAs, Mariah will perform a medley of her smash-hits at the show, which will be broadcast live from UBS Arena in New York.

Viewers can watch the ceremony at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and MTV. Paramount+ will stream the ceremony.

Next month's MTV VMAs is being hosted by rapper LL COOL J - who Mariah presented the Video Vanguard Award to in 1997.

Mariah's last performance at the awards bash was in 2005, where she celebrated the release of her 10th studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi.

But over the years, the Honey hitmaker has performed at the event several times, including in 1991 when she appeared with the late Whitney Houston.

Lady Gaga leads the nominations for the 2025 MTV VMAs, with nominations in 12 categories.

It will be the third time the pop legend has topped the nominations list - something no other artist has done in VMAs history.

Bruno Mars has earned 11 nominations, whilst Kendrick Lamar has 10.

Rose and Sabrina Carpenter have eight nominations each, including in major categories like Best Pop and Artist of the Year.

There are two new categories this year for Best Country and Best Pop Artist.

In June, Mariah achieved an impressive milestone with one of her hit songs.

Over 500 million people listened to the R B-and-pop star's 1995 track Fantasy on the music streaming platform Spotify.

Fantasy was Mariah's ninth Number One single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it spent eight weeks at the top from September 30 to November 18, 1995.

It was also the first single, by a female artist, to debut atop the chart, and only the second single to do so after "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson.

Fantasy - which was written by Mariah, Steven Stanley, Adrian Belew, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Dave Hall - is about how a woman is in love with a man, and every time she sees him, the woman fantasises about being in a relationship with him.

Mariah, 56, said in a recent interview that she was surprised by how many people resonated with Fantasy.

Speaking to 98.5 KRZ in June, she said: "A lot of people, they didn't think I should do that song. And why would I work with O.D.B.? Because they didn't understand that was my choice.

"And, anyway, it ended up being one of my favourite - one of my biggest songs ever."

Mariah has now got four songs that have reached this milestone, with the others being the 1994 holiday classic All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has been streamed over two billion times, 2005's We Belong Together, which has been listened to over 777 million times, and 2009's Obsessed, which has totted almost 600 million streams.
