    State Highway 8 in the South Island is blocked after a serious crash near Lake Tekapo


    The two-car accident happened on the Tekapo-Twizel Road, three kilometres west of Lake Tekapo township, around 9am.

    Big delays are expected and motorists are asked to postpone their trips.

    Waka Kotahi Transport Agency spokesman Mark Owen says people in that area, and around the country, should plan ahead.

    He says people can look on the website to check busy times and avoid them if possible.

    Two people have already died on the roads this weekend, a motorcyclist in Upper Hutt and someone who was in a car accident in Gisborne.
