Chappell Roan admits she will likely say something "controversial" if she wins a Grammy

The breakout pop star - whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz - is in contention for Album of the Year for 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess', Song and Record of the Year for viral hit 'Good Luck, Babe!' and Best New Artist at the 2025 ceremony

And although the 26-year-old singer says it's an "honour" to be nominated, especially as a "gay artist", it feels like a "double-edged sword", because she sees the Grammys as a "talent show for the popular kids" and she feels like an outsider.

Speaking on 'A Carpool Karaoke Christmas' on Apple TV+, she confessed to Zane Lowe: "It's such a double-edged sword for me, because I'm like, 'Yes, it is a talent show for the popular kids.'

    "That's one side.

"But the other side is, 'Oh my God, how amazing is it that a gay artist wrote a gay song that went No. 1, with a gay writer who did not grow up in the industry, did not have an in, has been busting her a** for like a decade?.

"That's honourable to me. It's an honour to be nominated with some of the other artists."

Chappell continued: "I don't have a speech yet, but you know me. I'm going to say something controversial.

"Why not? Girl, what do I have to lose?

"The fearlessness comes from in my heart knowing I'm always going to be OK."

Chappell has been open about her struggles with fame and her mental health and has been praised for setting boundaries with her fans after some "weird" behaviour left her feeling "unsafe".

She wrote on Instagram: "I want to love my life, be outside, giggle with my friends, go to the movie theater, feel safe, and do all the things every single person deserves to do.

"Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and friends. Please stop assuming things about me. There is always more to the story. l am scared and tired.

"And please-don't call me Kayleigh. I feel more love than I ever have in my life. I feel the most unsafe I have ever felt in my life.

"There is a part of myself that I save just for my project and all of you. There is a part of myself that is just for me, and I don't want that taken away from me. (sic)"
