26-year-old Chance Edwards appeared in the Dunedin District Court this week, admitting strangulation, possession of a weapon and wilful damage.
The ODT reports he attacked the groom's father when he stopped him fighting another guest.
He wrapped the victim's long hair around his neck, turning him shades of purple and blue and rupturing blood vessels in his eyes.
He couldn't offer any real explanation.
Judge David Robinson sentenced Edwards to 12 months' home detention and 200 hours' community work.
