Auckland's Minister believes people across the city will be celebrating changes to Auckland Transport

The Government's stripping AT of most of its powers and refocusing it on delivering public transport.

The mayor and councillors will be responsible for major roads and the city centre, while local boards will have oversight of local roads - including speed limits.

Minister Simeon Brown says it brings Auckland in line with the rest of the country.

He says every other council gets to make decisions about what happens on their roads and streets, Auckland shouldn't be different.
