Cynthia Erivo isn't "chasing" EGOT status

The Wicked star is "three-quarters of the way" to joining the exclusive club of award winners - who all have an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award - but she has missed out on an Oscar three times and Cynthia has now insisted claiming the quadruple isn't a priority for her.

She told Stylist magazine: "I've actually never said that I want an EGOT, but it keeps coming at me. Before I went to the US, I didn't know it was a thing until I was three-quarters of the way there.

"It would be amazing to complete the four, but that's not the reason I'm doing my job. The reason I do what I do is because I love the connection I get to make with people.

"The most thrilling thing is to stand in front of an audience, sing a song and see a person look into your eyes and sing it back to you. That's so much more rewarding than an award.

"So an EGOT: how grand and glorious that would be. But that's not the thing I'm chasing. Because once that happens, then what? It has to be bigger than that."

Cynthia missed out on the Best Actress prize at the Academy Awards last year for her role in Wicked while she was previously nominated in the same category for Harriet in 2020 as well as Best Song for the film's track Stand Up.

She won a Daytime Emmy in 2017 for The Color Purple while she also nabbed a Grammy for her work on the musical's soundtrack and a Tony for her performance in the stage production. She also has another Grammy for Wicked song Defying Gravity with Ariana Grande.

The EGOT club features big names including Sir Elton John, John Legend, Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson while Steven Spielberg became the most recent new member when he won his first Grammy Award last month.

The Jurassic Park moviemaker won in the Best Music Film category for producing the documentary Music by John Wiliams.

Spielberg is just the 22nd person to achieve EGOT status.
