    Mystery remains over why thousands of dead mackerel have been washing up around Kawau Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf


    Witnesses say locals are cleaning up trailer loads of fish from nearby beaches.

    LegaSea spokesman Scott Macindoe says in some areas fish are piled three-deep.

    He doesn't think it's from a fishing trawler, but rather a natural occurrence, because of how many dead fish there are.
