    A group of lifeguards are being provided with support, after a desperate effort to rescue a surfer near Raglan


    Two lifeguards brought the man to shore, unconscious, at Whale Bay, about 2.30 yesterday afternoon.

    Three other lifeguards helped them perform CPR, but the man was unable to be revived.

    Surf Lifesaving New Zealand says it's extending its heartfelt condolesences to the man's whanau and friends, and is supporting the lifeguards involved.

    Police say they've referred the death to the Coroner.
