A coroner has heard a probation officer believed 'any attractive female' was at risk from a convicted rapist, who murdered his neighbour, Juliana Herrera within weeks of his release on parole

A coroner has heard a probation officer believed 'any attractive female' was at risk from a convicted rapist, who murdered his neighbour, Juliana Herrera within weeks of his release on parole

Joseph Brider was jailed for life, after violating and murdering Herrera at her flat in Christchurch's Addington, in January 2022.

He'd been paroled just 72 days earlier.

Counsel assisting Coroner Alexandra Cunninghame, Rebekah Jordan, has opened a coronial inquest, saying Police spoke with a different woman who'd spent time with Brider - to advise her of his history and assess her safety.

But his neighbour and eventual victim Herrera was separated from him by just a wall - and was never notified of his background.
