'Adolescence' was the big winner at this year's Gotham TV Awards, scooping three prizes
The psychological crime drama series topped Netflix's viewing charts in 93 countries across the world, and the show achieved further success on Monday night (02.06.25) by winning the Breakthrough Limited Series prize at the second Gotham TV Awards, which took place at Cipriani Wall Street, New York City
5 June 2025
The four-episode miniseries told the story of how 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of his school classmate Katie Leonard (Emilia Holliday).
As well as sparking debate for its subject matter, each episode of the series was shot in a single, continuous take.
'Adolescence' pair Stephen Graham and Cooper, who made his acting debut in the show, also won solo awards.
Graham scooped Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series.
Accepting the accolade, he told the audience: "With our show, we wanted to rip up the rule book. This was a small colloquial piece that was made with love and respect, humility and dignity.
"[This award] shows that no matter how small the story is, if you make it with love and care, it can travel all the way across the world.
"Sometimes the lunatics take over the asylum and we show what we're capable of."
What's more, 15-year-old Cooper triumphed in the Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series category.
He shared the award with Dying for Sex's Jenny Slate.
Other big winners on the night included The Pitt's Breakthrough Drama Series victory.
Ben Whishaw won Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series for Netflix's 'Black Doves', and Matlock's Kathy Bates secured the Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series prize.
'The White Lotus' star Parker Posey was handed the Legend Tribute, and she thanked the show's creator Mike White for her character, Victoria Ratcliff.
She said: "Thank you, Mike White, for writing this character for me, for believing in a middle-aged woman and for believing in a legend.
"Let's keep the arts alive, let's turn this business into entertainment that everyone can love."
Other success stories saw Deli Boys' Poorna Jagannathan win Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Comedy Series.
Accepting the gong, she said: "New York City's opinion is the only one I care about."
