The Mountain Safety Council's agrees there are plenty of questions - after a 66-year-old tramper has been found alive, after three weeks of fruitless searching

Graham Garnett went missing in Tasman's Kahurangi National Park on December 30, with searches called off last week.

Yesterday, contractors found him at Venus Hut, and he's been reunited with family.

Chief Executive Mike Daisley says it highlights how huts increase chances of survival.

He says rescue teams did their best in such a vast area - but being unable to leave a hut could've kept him hidden from view.
