Police are treating the discovery of a 64-year-old woman's body at a worksite on Taihape Road 0 in Omahu - near Hastings last week, as a homicide

Sharlene Smith's body was found last Tuesday.

Detective Inspector James Keene says early enquiries establish this death was tragic and avoidable.

Police are asking for sightings of a white 2005 Mazda 3 sports hatch on the Friday and Saturday of January 30 and 31 - around Taihape and Omahu Roads, in Fernhill.

They'd also like to hear from witnesses to any suspicious activity in that time.
