Ghomer Dulay's wife and eldest child were also severely injured, while on their way to Canterbury's Mount Hutt, last August.

The 46-year-old lost control of his car on Rakaia Terrace Road, hitting a tree.

He's been sentenced to three months community detention, nine months supervision, and has lost his licence for a year.

Judge Mark Callaghan conceded prison or home detention were inappropriate, given Dulay's mental health struggles.
