A child sex offender deported from Australia has been living in New Zealand since July last year without oversight

A child sex offender deported from Australia has been living in New Zealand since July last year without oversight

The Herald's open justice reports the man was convicted and imprisoned in Queensland in early 2020 - for multiple sexual offences against a child.

His risk profile is consistent with needing ongoing oversight and engagement with a probation officer - but these conditions haven't been imposed.

The man had been released for a suspended sentence after 15 months in custody - a situation the law doesn't cater to - meaning the Judge didn't have the jurisdiction to make the final order.

Corrections says it's aware of the judgement and is considering how it will respond.
