Alicia Silverstone no longer knows what became of the iconic wardrobe she wore as Cher Horowitz in the 1995 teen comedy Clueless

The 49-year-old actress, who starred in the much-loved comedy - which became a touchstone of 1990s pop culture - alongside Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison and the late Brittany Murphy, admitted she "stupidly" gave the clothes away years ago.

Speaking while promoting her upcoming Netflix romantic comedy A Merry Little Ex-Mas, Alicia reflected on her time making Clueless and the unforgettable preppy fashion that defined her character, telling People: "Before I did Clueless, I really was a T-shirt and jeans kind of girl.

"I wasn't too into fashion at all.

"I ended up giving all the clothes away because I realized it was not working in my life. I gave them all away stupidly."

The lucky recipient of Cher's plaid skirts, matching blazers and knee-high socks, Silverstone said, was filmmaker Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola.

Alicia added: "Lord only knows what Gia's done with them.

"Gia doesn't know where they are either, so she must have given them away, too. They all just are gone."

Alicia added she briefly tried to emulate her Clueless character's stylish aesthetic after filming ended.

She said: "After I did (Clueless) I thought, 'Oh, I want to have all these clothes, I'm going to wear these clothes.' Which was a delusional idea because I was not like that girl.

"Who's wearing Mary Janes and high stockings everywhere you go?"

Nearly 30 years after the original film's release, Alicia is preparing to reprise her role as Cher in a new sequel series currently in development at Peacock.

Speaking during an appearance on Today in August, she said: "Not much," when asked what she could reveal, before adding about the project: "I'm really excited about it. I think we're going to try really hard."

She added: "The goal is to make it honour what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher. So we want to honour that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I'm confident that we'll be able to do that, but we're in baby stages right now."

The sequel series was officially announced in April when Silverstone shared a post on Instagram featuring clips and GIFs from the original movie.

She wrote alongside a screenshot of Variety's report confirming the project: "Totally buggin'... in the best way."
