State Highway 6 east of Nelson, State Highway 57 and 56 north of Shannon, and many local roads are closed or impacted.
Foxton and Shannon residents are being asked to urgently conserve water, and many flights in and out of Nelson are cancelled.
On the Kapiti Coast, Paekakariki Holiday Park Manager Marilyn Heazlewood says some tent campers were moved inside overnight due to strong winds bringing down branches.
