A 28-year-old man who police say attempted to flee from them near Taupo early this morning has been charged with dangerous driving causing death.
The man failed to stop at a fatal crash site near Rotokawa and drove past at a high speed.
Superintendent Andy McGregor says 30 seconds into the chase, the man's vehicle crashed into a fence, killing a 45-year-old man.
He says when drivers are signalled to stop - they need to do so - or the consequences will be worse.
The arrested man will appear in the Taupo District Court today.
