Aucklanders face a higher-than-planned hike of five percent in their rates bills, to help plug a billion dollar fall in council revenue

Mayor Phil Goff has recently laid out his 10-year Recovery Budget proposal.
The one-off boost will add 36 dollars to the rates bill for the next financial year, it's likely to return to 3.5 the following year.
Goff says this rise is essential, and will raise 450 million dollars in the space of one year.
