Emergency departments are bracing themselves for an influx of alcohol affected patients today

Emergency departments are bracing themselves for an influx of alcohol affected patients today

It's crate day today - an event that attracts predominantly males, who try to drink an entire crate of beer across the day.

A Police spokesperson says they don't want to stop people from enjoying a beer with their mates, but they want people to keep themselves and others safe.

New Zealand Alcohol Beverages Council executive director Bridget MacDonald suggests people share a crate instead.

She says a good rule is no, low and slow.

She says it's okay not to drink alcohol, but if choosing to drink, sip your drink slowly.

A Whanganui Hospital spokesperson says it's one of the busier days for the emergency department.
