North Queensland coach Todd Payten has challenged his side to iron out their kinks in order to become genuine NRL contenders

The Cowboys have crashed out of the premiership race - losing 26-18 to Cronulla in Sydney.

The former Warriors coach has made the playoffs in two of the four seasons he's been in Townsville, but he's adamant his team needs to evolve.

The Sharks will meet the Panthers next weekend to determine which of those teams goes through to the NRL grand final.
