Unelected Hastings youth councillors have been granted the right to vote

Unelected Hastings youth councillors have been granted the right to vote

Hastings District Council has supported a motion by the youth council, to give them not only seats on council committees, but also voting rights.

It follows a controversial campaign, with some saying it undermines the powers of those elected to the council.

High-schooler Chris Proctor is on the youth council, and yesterday presented his case to the council, saying it's a step to ensure youth aren't only heard, but empowered.

The vote passed with the Mayor's casting vote.
