    New Zealander Matt Payne's topped the timesheets in the first laps thrown down ahead of this year's Bathurst 1000 .

    Payne's pipped Cam Waters and Supercars championship leader Will Brown in the first practice session for Sunday's Great Race - the top three separated by just .03 of a second.

    Practice two featuring the co-drivers is set to start at 5 to 7.
