Population growth appears to be slowing, but every region is continuing to grow

Latest estimates from Stats NZ show the population increased 1.8 percent in the year to June, compared with 2.5 percent the previous year.

More than three-quarters of growth is due to migration.

Auckland's Papakura Local Board area is by far the country's fastest-growing local government area -- up 5.1 percent.

Waiheke is bucking the trend -- recording a 0.3 percent decline in population.
