Tens of thousands are without power as winds pick up in southeast Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, as Cyclone Alfred nears

The slow-moving storm is expected to reach the coast tonight or early tomorrow morning, with flash flooding and a dangerous storm surge expected.

ABC Correspondent Bridget Brennan says winds exceeding 100 kilometres an hour have been recorded on the Gold Coast.

She says in Queensland there's more than 20-thousand without power and its becoming too dangerous for crews to repair them.
