MetService is warning of heavy rain and severe gales across the South Island, beginning this evening

MetService is warning of heavy rain and severe gales across the South Island, beginning this evening

A red warning is in place for the Canterbury high country, between 10pm tonight and 3pm tomorrow - with gusts of up to 150 kilometres expected.

MetService's Mmathapelo Makgabutlane says winds will be at their strongest on Sunday, and people should consider postponing their travel plans.

She says possible impacts include falling trees, damage to property, and power disruptions.
