Multiple explosions have been reported in Venezuela's capital Caracas

Multiple explosions have been reported in Venezuela's capital Caracas

CNN reports a team on the ground reported power outages and the sound of aircraft overhead after the explosions.

The explosions were reported just before 2am local time.

Tensions between the US and Venezuela have been rising with the US ramping up its military presence in the region.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned the US is preparing to take new action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela.

In October Trump said he had authorised the CIA to operate inside Venezuela.

There has been no word from the White House, the State Department or the Pentagon yet.
