Delroy Lindo's career has been "birthed and nurtured in America"

The 73-year-old actor was born in London, but he moved to the US during his teens, and he no longer considers himself to be a Brit.

Speaking to Sky News, Delroy explained: "My career has been birthed and nurtured in America.

"I was born in Lewisham hospital, my family's from Jamaica, and my mom was part of the Windrush generation. I am British to that extent, that is my reality.

"[But] I thank God I came to America, that I went to acting school in America, that I was a New York-based theatre actor for TEN years before I started doing film, and I thank God Spike Lee saw me on Broadway."

Delroy was recently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Sinners. However, the Hollywood star was caught off guard by his nomination.

Delroy shared: "My son called me. I will not say I was asleep, but I was not fully awake, and I'm listening to my son very excitedly say how proud of me he was. And I then noticed on my phone I had 179 Text messages, so I knew that something was up."

Delroy recently revealed that he did his best to ignore the Oscar buzz surrounding Sinners and the prospect of finally earning a nomination after more than 50 years in the industry.

He told Good Morning America: "I was trying to maintain a certain distance, because I was not sure of what would happen.

"It's difficult to not have it on your mind. But I was trying as much as I could to just let it be what it was going to be."

Delroy also revealed that he found Delta Slim a difficult part to play because he had to master musical instruments for the role.

He explained: "The musical aspect - the piano, the keyboard and the harmonica - it's a different side of the brain.

"So I would be at the keyboard practicing, and I had some incredible musicians who helped me, but I was aware - sometimes the mind and the fingers, they don't line up well."
