The Police watchdog has found an officer was justified in shooting a man attempting to carjack vehicles at gunpoint in Auckland

In September 2023 police pursued a stolen vehicle, believed involved in an aggravated robbery, down the Northwestern Motorway, which drove on to Henderson

The officer shot the offender twice in the back when he got out and approached vehicles with a long-barrelled gun.

The IPCA says the man posed a real and imminent threat of death or serious injury, and urgent action was necessary.

It says Police took appropriate action in accordance with policy.
