Seven research crown institutes will now merge into three public research organisations.

Director of the MacDiarmid Institute Nicola Gaston says it's exciting to see a new public research group is also being established - to focus on advanced technology and AI.

She says New Zealand definitely has the talent in these areas, but a lot of them already have their own jobs.

Gaston says she remembers how tough it was when Callaghan Innovation was set up and it'll take proper resourcing to set it up.
